Regional SA set to showcase their local communities. Entries now open for KESAB’s Sustainable Communities program 2016.

Entries are open for KESAB’s annual SA community awards recognising regional community groups, councils and schools for dedication and motivation to enhance their local community and environment.

Sustainable Communities – the old Tidy Towns – is a focus for hundreds of regional communities to showcase positive actions taken by communities, schools, businesses and councils across SA to protect their local environment, enhance their towns, embrace sustainability and showcase their initiatives.

“Long-term sustainable practices are now entrenched in how communities manage local issues and the 2016 awards will showcase the best examples in regional South Australia,” said Program Manager, Alex Hammett.

“We are looking for the very best town across small, medium and large categories and then one of those will be declared the best of the best. We are also looking for the very best school, council and community projects across the State. Any community group, council, business or school in regional SA can get involved and we accept single or combined entries. This year we want to focus more on digital photos and short statements outlining activities so that we can have a greater understanding before making a visit to a region,” said Alex Hammett.

In 2015, over 170 category entries were received and over 30 towns visited during comprehensive judging, which resulted in Mundulla being announced as the overall State Winner.

“Entrant feedback shows the awards ceremony is an absolute highlight for participants, giving them an opportunity to share their stories with like-minded people from across the regions. Around 350 people attended last year’s ceremony and associated expo and declared the full day event an excellent networking experience.”

“The program is all about people getting together to contribute to a better place to live, work and play, to create a place where visitors are delighted to come, and locals want to stay. At the same time it’s about protecting, conserving, managing and improving SA’s precious natural environment. Entering the awards is a way of recognising and acknowledging the hard work, long hours, bright ideas, passion, enthusiasm and spirit of regional South Australians and their communities,” Alex says.
